At most of the times – or at least sometimes – most of us – okay, a few of us – would have been in a place where our minds & thoughts are a fine blend of two completely contradictory state of emotions or mental state. We either choose to harmonize with it or have a tough time trying to understand it.
All (most) of us love to look strong, pretend to be hard as rock outside but beneath all those layers of toughness there are a number of tiny fragile emotions which actually makes us what we are. We normally don’t like ourselves to look or be felt fragile since being seen as a vulnerable being comes with its own consequences.
As artists, we always believe that it’s not just about creating pretty pictures. So, we wanted to depict a person who is mentally & physically strong yet have those fragile layers of vulnerability beneath. To reflect this contradictory state of mind and emotions we wanted to create photographs that depict contradictions with every aspect in the frame.
- Warm & cool tones Lighting
- Teal (attire) & orange (backdrop)
- Person with strong Physique yet fragile emotions
- Nithya Rajapandian – Photographer
- Shweta Gai – Model
- Swetha Das – Make up artist
- Frank Donald – Photographer
- All About June – Wardrobe
An attire in teal & an orange background (being opposite on the color wheel there’s no other combination of colors that are so opposite yet harmonizing) was the core idea to highlight the contradictory harmony.
To pull this whole thing off we wanted a natural person who is super strong and ooze out confidence. Shweta Gai made a perfect choice to this and she pulled this off effortlessly as ever.
To increase the element of blue in the frame apart from the dress, we lit the model’s face using a kicker light with blue gel on it. Further to add a punch & definition to the frame – a non softened yellow light is added to other side of model’s face.
We also shot photos using Shutter drag technique which clearly depicts the theme of the different states that our mind & emotions are in.
Our team is extremely pleased with the photos. Would love to listen to your feedback and thoughts about this photo series. Do share them in the comment box below.
